2020-08-08 | Newman peak, Spionkop Ridge | 2608 max | 1511 TH | 24.5 km (total, 10 km bike) | 1200 +- TA (GPS showed 2297, doubt it!! | w/ Peter

Waterton! Shannon dropped me at the trailhead (Red Rock Canyon) to meet Peter for this one. The first 5km is a gently rolling old road so perfect for biking. At the Goat Lake trail we switched gear and climbed up past Goat Lake thru the burn area. Some trees around the lake and in other spots had been spared, but there were many blackened stumps doing bear impressions along the way. Once on the ridge the wind was constant and strong. Buffeted by the wind made for extra work just to walk on ‘level’ ground. The sun only made short appearances and I was wishing I hadn’t left my gloves with my bike. Summer??? This felt like fall! Fun hike though, can’t really go wrong with Waterton, and none of the stumps were bears. Back to Crooked Creek campground for steak, potatos, salad, and rhubarb crisp w/icecream! Good post hiking food.
