Bomber Command and the Nightingale
This was the first occasion that I attended the engine run at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton where they have restored a Lancaster bomber. This was September 20, 2013 and was the first night run of all four engines. The night run is significant as this is when the Lancasters would be flying out of Britain bound for German targets in Europe.
This video is mostly for the sound as it was on my iPhone and is the leadup to the engine run (they start the preflight checks at the end). I missed the first bit of the leadup. Apparently this was a study of Nightingales (birds) and the recording inadvertently recorded the Lancasters passing overhead on their bombing run to Germany. As the commentator states 197 bombers left that evening, 11 did not return along with their flight crews of 54 men.
My grandfathers cousin, Donald Ditzler, died over Germany in a Lancaster bomber. His name is on the memorial at the museum.
Gives me the chills to hear those engines. Lest we forget.
