Picea - Spruce
Spruce:
Spruce trees are the backbone of the Calgary winter landscape. They are the hardiest and unlike pines they have rich green and blue colors rather than the often more yellow tones of the pine foliage. They are also densely branched making them great for breaking the wind, providing privacy, and shelter for wildlife.

Pests and Diseases: If kept happy and free from stress Spruce trees are generally pest free with the exception of isolated outbreaks of spruce sawfly. There is also an insect pest that affects Spruce called the pine weevil which bores into the leader of the tree where it lays eggs, the next spring the larvae feed on the cambium killing the leader and causing it to crook over. This is occasional and can be repaired by training a new leader from a lateral branch.
