Evans Cherry: (Prunus cerasus 'Evans')
A proven hardy cherry for the Calgary zone, these are now more readily available in caliper size in the local nurseries.

Size and Characteristics: Evans Cherry matures at approx. 4 m (13') wide and approx. 4 m (13’) tall. They have an attractive shiny bronze bark with white lenticles (horizontal hash marks) providing some additional winter interest. The spring bloom is white with some fragrance in the late May timeframe. Green leaves, yellow fall color. Fruit is a sour cherry that sweetens as it remains on the tree but in my garden the birds and squirrels get most of them before that.

Pests and Diseases: Same as other Prunus but I have yet to observe black knot on Evans cherry.
